AIKIDO & IAIDO Japanese Martial Arts
Aikido is an original, non-competitive martial art from Japan that was created by Ueshiba Morihei [1883-1969]. It is a partner-based martial art in which partners alternate roles, with realistic situations, applying multitude forms of attacks and the receiving end diffusing those attacks by locks, throws and immobilizations. The intent of Aikido is not to win over the opponent but to avoid confrontation and calmly and peacefully subdue the opponent.
Aikido activities involve stretching, rotating, twisting, rolling, falling, striking, grabbing, sword and stick training and as such can be quite strenuous. This training builds a very balanced sense of martial-ness without the aggressiveness of many other combative arts. As it was the intent of the founder, people of virtually all age, male/female and other backgrounds can practice Aikido. Since there is no competition, individuals with commitment and diligence can adjust the level of practice to their physical condition. There are many contemplative elements within the Aikido training that some people call it the “moving zen” practice.
While there is no competition, Aikido techniques are very effective without being combative so the Japanese police have incorporated it for their training.
